Finally. Finally! I have finished the blanket I have been working on since the late end of August. It took me two months. The longest time it had taken me to make a blanket before that was one month. I took so many breaks from crochet. I think it was a combination of doing the same stitch, getting bored, all the stressful things happening with my diabetes and Winston's health. I tell you what, you can have Type 1 Diabetes for 10 years, or 30 years, it's still going to be a pain in the arse.
I won't go on about how shit diabetes is, but I will say I am switching from the Freestyle Libre 1 to the Freestyle Libre 2. Apparently it's more accurate, of course being second generation, which means not having to check my blood sugar before I bolus. This is something that blows my mind! I've been checking my blood sugar for more than 30 years. I love technology, science, and medical research. So good!
Challenge Item #15: Ripple Blanket
Description
A four colour panelled blanket made using the ripple stitch, also known as the wave stitch, which gives each panel a gentle wavy look and shape. The is no border and I don't believe there is one needed with the ripple stitch. The ripple gives it a nice edging in itself.
Dimensions 135cm (53inches) x 124cm (48.8inches) making the blanket a great size for a throw, lap blanket, or a child's bed.
Hook Size and Yarn
Hook 5mm/H Yarn 4 Seasons Spot Saver USA style yarn in Cream, Violet, Silver, and Grey. If you've been following along on my crochet project you'll probably notice it's the same yarn I've been using in most of my projects this year. I was so close to using it all up! SO CLOSE. There's really only scraps left so I'm going to save the rest for a scrap yarn project further down the line. If you haven't read my previous crochet posts; the spot saver yarn is quite hardy, washable, and doesn't split.
Pattern Vivi's Colour Block Ripple Afghan - I learned ripple stitch a few years ago, but when you haven't used a stitch in awhile sometimes you need a refresher. I found this pattern great as a refresher and the pattern itself gave me the idea to colour block my blanket. Mind you I didn't do each panel to a specific width. I did each panel as long as the yarn would last.
Overall
I have a blanket my Oma made, a ripple stitch blanket, and I love it. It's one of my favourite blankets. The colours are subtle and it's colour blocked. I've always wanted to make a ripple stitch like my Oma did. Soft waves, large swathes of colour, and slightly ribbed. My blanket used a thicker yarn than hers. I believe she would have used a 3.5mm hook.
I know my Oma loved crochet and made so many blankets. Every now and then she would change it up with something like the ripple stitch. I already had a great respect for her and her talent, but oh boy the patience! I love this blanket, but I think my next blanket needs to be more varied. I do not have the patience for a repetitive stitch lol
The blanket itself is great. I tried it out and it's nice and snuggly. If someone wants it beforehand I'll give it to them, but otherwise I'm going to save it for charity.
