Crochet: Ribbed Mini Cowl

It's been so long since I posted an update on my crochet challenge I've forgotten how I've set these posts out lol. Of course it's not really that long.... is it? July 12th was the last crochet post. Not even a month! Of course being in lockdown makes one month feel like six.

I've shaken off the Lockdown Fever since then and crocheted a shit load of things. Ok maybe 6 things. I've been reading, doing crochet, reading some more, doing more crochet, contracting oodie madness. Honestly, I can't. My fucking oodie is the shit. To be able to have a cup of tea, sit in my rocking chair, wearing my oodie, and crochet is bliss. BLISS.

Given that we are in lockdown, super tight lockdown (my movements are restricted to a 5km radius from my home now, not that I go out except for bunny veggies because they can't be delivered damnit), I can't give any of the scarves to charity. This hasn't stopped me from making them though. Instead I am going to carry on and put them in storage until next winter.

Challenge Item #8: Ribbed Mini Cowl

Description

This is a very straight forward, chunky, ribbed cowl in black, worked across and joining both ends with a slip stitch. The inner side is smooth with only the outside being ribbed.

The dimensions come to 26cm (10.2 inches) x 30cm (11.8 inches) when unrolled and laid flat.

Hook Size and Yarn

Hook: 9 M/N  Yarn: Lion Brand Heartland Thick & Quick in Black Canyon. I'm trying to use as much as this yarn as possible and am almost through it! I didn't realise how much I bought. SO MUCH. I love this yarn, obviously. It's so soft and warm, it has a great heft, but it gets a bit... feathery? It doesn't split, thankfully, but if you work it enough it ends up like a woollen sweater you've worn a fair few times.

Pattern: I did find a cowl pattern I wanted to try and began with it, but after a few rows I gave up. I was still a little restless from my last bout of restlessness. Instead I began again and just kept it simple.

This is what I did. That's right, I'm sharing! Ha! It's not as elegant as an actual pattern to follow, but if you want to know what I did then here it is.

Foundation chain: ch 23, hdc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc across until end of row, ch 2 and turn.
First row: hdc into first back post, hdc back post across until end of row, ch2 and turn.
Second row: hdc across until end of row, ch 2 and turn.
Repeat first and second rows for 32 rows or desired length.

Slip stitch ends together on smooth side, ribbed sides facing each other.

Overall

I enjoyed making this because it was super quick and easy. I think it was just what I needed to get me out of my fidget stage. It worked. I'm keeping this one. It's comfortable and warm. I was going to make myself, or buy myself, a black scarf, but I think this will do. I have so many scarves already just for myself. A cowl works just as well and it saves me space. Bonus!

Project also posted to my Ravelry and Instagram.
